It was a common mode of salutation and is described in the “Sacred Writings,” as when men saluted the sun, moon, or stars, and evidence of these superstitions is found in most countries. The ancient Greeks kissed the lips, hands, or feet as an act of respect, evidenced by the writings of Homer. In ancient Rome, Isaac D’Israeli notes how certain people “considered themselves as fortunate” if they were allowed to kiss the hands of their dictators. In modern times, kissing is often a part of religious ceremonies.
